Parent/Guardian notification of Scoliosis Screening Program
This is a notification of the Scoliosis Screening Program for the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District. The Scoliosis Screening Program is mandated by the Texas Health and Safety Code, Chapter 37. This notification will also be posted on the Health Services Department website located at www.lfcisd.net/offices/h/health_services/contact_us/.

The scoliosis screening for the school year 2018-2019 will include:

  • Female students who are 10 and 12 years old on and after January 1, 2019

  • Male students who are 14 years old on or after January 1, 2019.

Any students new to our school district in grades 10, 11 and 12 and have no record of havingbeen screened previously, will also be screened for scoliosis. The screening will be done by the school nurses who have been trained to do the scoliosis screenings. The nurses will visually examine each student’s spine and use a scoliometer to measure the curve if a suggestion of spinal deformity is present. Students will need to remove their shirts for this exam. Female students should wear a bra, a sports bra or bathing suit top under their shirt on the day of the screening. The goal of school screening for scoliosis is the “identification of small progressive curvatures of the spine.” The Scoliosis Research Academy, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America and the American Academy of Pediatrics believe that studies demonstrate that non-operative interventions such as bracing and specific scoliosis exercises can decrease the likelihood of curve progression to the point of requiring surgery. If the student is presently being treated for scoliosis, please send the doctor’s note of the treatment to the school nurse and the student will not be screened. If the parent/guardian wants to exclude the student from screening, an affidavit stating the screening will be done outside of the school as soon as possible may be submitted to the nurse to be followed by the note from the doctor the screening has been done. If the parent/guardian wants to decline the screening due to a religious conflict, an affidavit must be submitted to the school nurse on or before the date spinal screening is scheduled. The dates scheduled for your student’s school will be posted on line as well as sent home as a written notification with your student. If questions, please contact your school nurse.
